Catapult Announce New Funding Program for Women-led Businesses

Sydney based Catapult announce a new funding program for women-led businesses to complement their business accelerator program.

Australian women business leaders struggle more than their male counterparts to grow their businesses. That’s the evidence arising from past research conducted by Business Connector in partnership with She Business.

The survey of business leaders demonstrated that women leaders face a battle to convince investors of their need to grow. Most businesses surveyed said that they need funds to support marketing efforts, develop products and create digital applications. But the research showed there are insufficient opportunities for women to access investment sources, and there are not enough training programs that teach women how to attract funding.

Mr Mike Boorn Plener, founder of Catapult said, “The challenge of running a small, new business is knowing where to look for funding, or how to approach investors or institutions like banks. There is a lack of awareness on what is needed to do and how to present the information” He went on to say, “We provide the mentoring needed to assist in this area and in many cases are able to provide the introductions to suitable funding institutions and individuals.”

The research conducted by Business connector showed that when it comes to funding, not all sources are created equal. Public funds and charities are more likely sources of funding for women in business.

There is also evidence women leaders are not supported in Australian business. Earlier research from the Australian Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry and from Ernst and Young have produced similar findings.

To address the issue of lack of information about funding, Catapult has created a new ‘funding program for women business leaders’. The program is designed to inform women of what funding is available, and offers coaching in how to present to private as well as commercial investors.

The program is structured as a series of group seminars and 1:1 mentoring with successful female leaders and private investors. Entry to the program is competitive, however, the Catapult team wants to support as many women as possible so as to improve the opportunities for women.

Mike Boorn Plener said, “The opportunities for growing women-led Australian businesses are substantial. Productivity is key to business confidence in Australia, and businesses run by women in Australia can help lift that productivity. But it will only happen if those businesses are given the opportunity to grow. At Catapult, we want to provide that opportunity in the new program we are offering”
