The Brooklyn doctor helped rescue a man who was critically injured while working on a construction site near Kingsbrook Medical Center on East 49th Street in East Flatbush at about 8:30 a.m. A backhoe had hit a light pole that toppled over and knocked the man into the trench, according to reports from NBC New York. When the doctor arrived, he saw the man in the trench, unconscious and bleeding. He then climbed down a ladder to aid the man. Of this amount, 2,800 federal cases have been consolidated in a multidistrict litigation (MDL) under the jurisdiction of a Louisiana federal court by the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPMDL). In relation to the MDL, a monthly status conference was held in February 2016. The cases are slowly working their way through the court system toward their day in court with the selection of bellwether trial selections. This consolidation will serve to hasten court review and prevent duplicative discovery processes, as well as save a lot of time and money to be expended by those involved in the litigation.

Additionally, the Court of Common Pleas in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania consolidated another 550 cases together in a mass tort program. These cases also had similar allegations levied against the same defendants.

One of the cases originally filed in a Vermont Federal Court as number 2:14-cv-00159-cr but now part of the MDL was by a plaintiff who alleges that her father suffered a brain bleed, otherwise known as a parenchymal hemorrhage while he was taking Xarelto. Doctors were unable to stop the bleeding by clotting it because Xarelto was in the man’s system, thus causing the death of the plaintiff’s father.

The young girl has indicated that she was getting ready to use the device when it exploded, catching her clothes on fire and causing painful burns on her arms, chest, side, and hands. She told the news outlet, “I was freaking out. My teeth were chattering. I was shaking so bad. It was really really scary.”

The girl is now reportedly being treated at the Burn Unit at Maricopa Integrated Health System and was expected to be taken in for surgery on May 10th, 2016. The news release noted that “….doctors aren’t sure how it will turn out.” In a statement to the press, her mother noted, “She wants to be beautiful like most other girls and she’s afraid that’s not going to happen for her.” It has been reported that following surgery, the girl may remain hospitalized for 1-2 week’s time.

Unfortunately, this girl is not the only young victim to have reported suffering injuries following an e-cigarette explosion. A 14-year-old boy recently approached a mall’s e-cigarette kiosk in New York with friends and was looking at a product when the device allegedly blew up in his face, causing him to become blind in his left eye. Many involved in this incident were questioning why a boy so young was able to browse these smoking products, which were illegal for him to use, to begin with. The boy’s father has since pursued legal action and is seeking compensation to help with current and future medical bills for his son.
