26-Year-Old California Resident Files E-Cig Explosion Lawsuit After Suffering 2nd and 3rd Degree Burns

May 15, 2016 – – LipsigLawyers.com reports on the details of a story released by NBC4 News in Southern California. The story spoke of a young man who has filed a lawsuit after reportedly suffering from both second and third-degree burns after an e-cigarette battery exploded within his pocket. The man told the news outlet, “All of the sudden I heard this noise and felt heat — it was like a road flare went up in my pocket.” At age 26, the Orange County resident said he was shocked, and “…had no idea that this could happen.”

The injuries he sustained reportedly required two surgeries and skin grafts. He states that he spent 11 days at the hospital to treat the burns and that doctors have informed him that his leg will likely take two years to heal. To obtain financial assistance for his mounting medical bills, the young man has decided to sue two stores in Orange and San Diego counties where he says that he purchased his battery and charger.

Unfortunately, this alleged victim is not the only one who is making these types of claims. The man notes that his case is among 35 total that his attorney has taken since the fall. One of those cases involved a young woman who was traveling to the Los Angeles airport to attend a missions trip when her e-cigarette battery also reportedly exploded, causing her to suffer painful burns across her thighs.

The news outlet noted that the U.S. Fire Administration states that, “The shape and construction of e-cigarettes can make them more likely than other products with lithium-ion batteries to behave like ‘flaming rockets’ when a battery fails.” This topic has been met with increasing controversy as more stories appear. It has been noted that as e-cigarettes become increasingly popular, these types of allegations also increase.
