30% Of Burglars Break Into A Home Using An Unlocked Door Or Window

There are many ways homeowners can burglar-proof their homes, but the most straightforward method is to make sure that windows and doors are locked at all times, ideally, or at the very least, at night and when no one is home.

According to recent statistics, 30 percent of burglars break into a home using an unlocked door or window, and 23 percent of them break in using a first-floor window. Most people install security systems on their doors and overlook doing the same for their windows.

There are several ways windows can be secured, the best of which, is of course to install a security system that would notify the homeowners in case of a break in so they can take it from there. Systems that come with a camera also send videos or images to the owner, which can be used as evidence. Installing a fake camera might also be a good idea, but burglars are usually smart people who know the difference between a real and a fake surveillance camera.

Windows can also be reinforced, using tempered or laminated glass that would be very difficult (and loud) to break, thus deterring burglars, and with the use of iron bars and grills that offer added security, in addition to strong window locks that are difficult to pick.

Motion sensors and bright floodlights work very well in deterring would-be burglars, if not, they are guaranteed to catch them in the act. Floodlights should not be only installed at main entrances, but over windows as well.

Another way to make sure a window is inaccessible to intruders is to plant thorny bushes under it to make sure invaders can not use said window as an entry point. With that being said, homeowners should avoid planting strong and tall trees near windows, as burglars can use them to climb and then break in. Being in a close-knit community where neighbors look out for each other is also a good deterrent for burglars.
