A report by Truly Experiences has highlighted what the residents of London think of some of the city’s most iconic buildings to shape the skyline.

The report found that 37% of London adults think the proposed skyscraper ‘The Tulip’ would change the skyline for the better. This is in contrast to 32% who think the building would have a negative impact on the city’s skyline.

The proposed skyscraper designed by famed British architect Norman Foster was planned to be built next to another iconic building, The Gherkin. The structure was to have a total height of 305.3 meters, making it the second tallest building in Western Europe after the Shard.

Despite previously receiving approval at the City Corporation’s Planning and Transportation Committee, plans to construct the building came to a halt in July this year when they were rejected by the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan.

The mayor stated that the design was not good enough for such a prime location. His concerns included the negative impact the skyscraper would have on London’s skyline, as well as the fact that the building would have a very limited public benefit.

The mayor’s viewpoint is supported by those of Duncan Wilson, the chief executive of Historic England. Wilson argued that the proposed building would harm the setting of the Tower of London and damage London’s unique heritage.

According to a report by Truly Experiences, it appears that the majority of London residents are in disagreement with Khan and Wilson. Nearly 40% think the Tulip would make London’s skyline better, not worse. 9% of weren’t sure and 22% believed the building wouldn’t make much difference.

The report is based on a survey by YouGov, in which 1134 London adults were asked their opinions on whether the city’s most iconic buildings have positively or negatively affected the London skyline.

The report found that 57% of London adults believe the Shard has changed the skyline for the better. Only 15% think it’s changed the skyline for the worse, while 21% believe it hasn’t made much difference.

St. Paul’s Cathedral seemed to have the most favourable vote; 70% think the Anglican cathedral has changed London’s skyline for the better, while just 1% think it’s changed the skyline for the worse.
