New York, USA – September 30, 2015 /PressCable/ —
Parker Waichman LLP, a national law firm that has spent many years fighting to ensure that the heroes of the 9/11 terrorist attacks are never forgotten, comments that a deadline is quickly approaching for some responders and survivors. According to The PBA Beat, members who were diagnosed with prostate cancer on or before October 21, 2013 must register with the Fund by October 21, 2015 to protect their eligibility to file a claim. For more information, claimants may view www.vcf.gov or call (855)885-1555.
The VCF is one of two programs established through the Zadroga Act. The other program is the World Trade Center (WTC) Health Program, which provides medical treatment and monitoring to responders and survivors. If Congress does not take action, these programs will expire starting this fall. Funding for the WTC Health Program is slated to end in October 2015 and the VCF is set to expire in October 2016. The WTC Health Program monitors over 70,000 people and treats 33,000. If the Program not renewed, cash reserves will be used to keep the program running into next year before it ends entirely.
Parker Waichman comments that these programs are crucial for many responders suffering from serious medical conditions as a result of toxic dust exposure. “The upcoming deadline highlights the need for permanent reauthorization of the Zadroga Act,” said Matthew J. McCauley, Senior Litigation Counsel at Parker Waichman. “These individuals sacrificed their health and well-being at a time when their country needed them most. They and their families deserve benefits.”
Parker Waichman actively worked toward the 2010 passage of the Zadroga Act, including taking part in lobbying efforts and trips to the nation’s capital, often along with the firm’s clients—other responders and survivors. The Mr. McCauley was among the lobbyists in 2010 and, again, lobbied with a large group, including the former “The Daily Show” host, Jon Stewart and other such luminaries, this month seeking permanent extension of the Act. The firm continues to support the Zadroga Act and remains dedicated to fighting for the rights of responders and survivors. In fact, Parker Waichman was also recently involved in the “Take Action” tool that allows responders, survivors, and advocates the ability to review any Congresspersons’ activities concerning the upcoming expiration of the James Zadroga Act. Parker Waichman assisted with the research on, and creation of, the Tool, which may be accessed at: Renew 911 Health Organization’s website.
The firm comments that some 9/11-related conditions, such as cancer, may take years to develop. “Some responders may not realize that they have developed serious health problems as a result of 9/11,” said Mr. McCauley. “These programs need to remain available so that survivors may access benefits.”
Parker Waichman continues to fight, alongside Ground Zero first responders, survivors, and advocates, to help ensure passage of Zadroga Act amendments, and vows to continue its efforts to safeguard these heroes and ensure all of the Zadroga Act compensation is received.
