Attorney Comments On NFL Ban Of Players With Sexual Assault Convictions

February 10, 2016 – – AbuseGuardian.com reports on the recent NFL ban of any player with convictions of sexual assault, domestic violence, or weapons from attending the annual scouting combine in Indianapolis. This ban also means that those players with convictions would not be invited to a draft.

NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations Troy Vincent announced the ban to NFL teams last month in a memo. A background check will be completed on any prospects, and if any convictions appear, the player will be barred. Any player that refuses the required background check will also be barred.

The combine consists of more than 300 players who take part in field tests, physicals, position-specific drills, and team meetings in hopes of making the NFL. This new policy is only expected to impact a few players, but Vincent feels it is necessary. He states in his memo: “It is important for us to remain strongly committed to league values as we demonstrate to our fans, future players, coaches, general managers, and others who support our game, that character matters.”

Many NFL stars have made headlines for domestic violence over the past few years. One example is the video of Baltimore Ravens’ player Ray Rice, which surfaced in 2014, and showed the athlete hitting his then-fiancee in an elevator. There was a tremendous amount of public outrage over the video, and some questioned the way the situation was handled by the NFL. The NFL appears to be trying to change its image with this new policy, and the partnership with the ‘No More campaign’ which shows PSAs against domestic violence during football broadcasts.

Attorney Brian Kent of the firm behind AbuseGuardian.com comments: “Sexual abuse shatters lives, and dangerous offenders should be punished. The rate of reporting assaults is extremely low, so we must act as advocates for victims of these devastating crimes to encourage more people to come forward.” Kent and his firm have many years of experience in recovering compensation for victims and are devoted to protecting the dignity, safety, and on-going security of every survivor. The firm is currently representing several clients in claims of sexual assault.
