New Zealand dominates in the global wood pulp trade. In 2014, New Zealand exported 233 thousand tonnes of wood pulp totaling 104 million USD, 6% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was China, where it supplied 47.8% of its total wood pulp exports in value terms.
Overall, the global wood pulp trade dropped to 328 million USD, with a CAGR of -6.5% from 2007 to 2014. In physical terms, it showed steady decline, falling from 1,130 thousand tonnes in 2007 to 730 thousand tonnes in 2014.
In 2014, Indonesia (31.4%), Japan (15.2%), the Netherlands (9.3%), Germany (7.0%) and Italy (6.0%) were the leading destinations of wood pulp imports, together making up 68.9% of global imports. The share of Indonesia increased significantly (+15 percentage points), while the share of Italy illustrated negative dynamics (-6 percentage points).
New Zealand and Norway were among the other main global suppliers of wood pulp in 2014 with a combined share of 57.9% of global exports. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were France (+18.3% per year) and the Netherlands (+9.5% per year). New Zealand significantly strengthened its position in the global export structure, from 13% in 2007 to 32% in 2014.
