A Night with Janis Joplin National Tour Selling Out Theaters Around the Country
Just two years after producers scrapped an off-Broadway run, Tony Award nominee Mary Bridget Davies is garnering rave reviews and selling out theater tickets on Janis Joplin national tour.

Just a few cities into its current national tour, the national touring production of the hit Broadway show, “A Night with Janis Joplin,” is cleaning up the stage in both ticket sales and critical reviews. The tour kicked off February 9 in Ontario, not quite two years after producers Scott Gershwin and Daniel Chilewich made the decision to pull the plug on a planned off-Broadway production in April 2014 due to weak ticket sales.
“Weak” is one adjective that can’t be applied to sales of “A Night with Janis Joplin” tour tickets, notes a spokesperson for secondary ticket market site TheatreTicketBank.com. The show, which enjoyed a strong two-year pre-Broadway national tour, seems made for the intimate small theaters in which the show is booked for its tour. In city after city, ticket sales are brisk, with many venues close to selling out and others sold out well before the performance date.
The third-party ticket market offers a second chance for fans who want to enjoy the show that New York theater critics called “electrifying,” with at least a handful of tickets available at most upcoming venues.
“Tickets for this show are very affordable,” according to industry insider. “That’s especially true of shows that are still a few months away, where the ticket prices are still just slightly above face value.”
The touring production brings Mary Bridget Davies back to reprise the role she originated in the original touring production and on Broadway. Davies was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical for her role when the show debuted on Broadway in 2013. The rock musical, unlike many of the popular “jukebox musicals” isn’t so much biographical as it is homage. Davies both sings and performs as Janis in concert, and serves as narrator in scenes where her backup singers take on the personae of Joplin’s musical influences, including Aretha Franklin, Odetta, Nina Simone and Bessie Smith.
The national tour of “A Night with Janis Joplin” will be appearing across the country in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, Missouri, Colorado, Kansas, Minnesota, South Carolina, South Dakota and Florida, as well as in Ontario, Winnipeg and Toronto.
