New Sonata Co-Commissioned by One Violinist in Each of the 50 States

Part 1 of a two year project celebrating the life and work of John Kendall, the 50 State Sonata Project will see Amerigo, for violin and piano, performed by each commissioner in their state throughout the year 2016. Violinists involved in the project include the former concertmaster of the San Antonio Symphony, current Curtis, Oberlin, Juilliard, and Rice students, Sphinx Virtuosi members, concertmasters of several state orchestras, and professors at several universities, including Brown.

John Kendall helped to bring the Suzuki method of music education to the United States in the early 1960s, and was an influential force in the formative years of Stephanie Ann Boyd, the project’s composer. “I was so fortunate to study violin with Mr. Kendall for a few years at the end of his life”, said Boyd. “I left every single lesson wholly inspired, and after he passed away I wanted to remember him in a way that paid adequate tribute to his tremendous positive impact on the world.”

Boyd is a 25 year old graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music and currently lives in New York City. Her recent career highlights involve co-directing the Tuesday Night New Music concert series, winning New England Conservatory’s Donald Martino Prize for Excellence in Composition, being chosen as the NEC/Boston Modern Orchestra Project Competition winner, and having her violin concerto premiered in Jordan Hall by recent Michael Hill International Competition prize-winner Eunae Koh under the baton of Australian conductor Nathan Aspinall. She has also just won an Augustine Foundation grant to write a new guitar concerto for Zaira Meneses.

Commissioners will be performing Amerigo on student recitals, faculty concerts, various chamber music series, and all-new-music concerts over the course of 2016. For more information, and to see the list of commissioners, visit http://stephanieannboyd.com/50-state-sonata-projec…
