Zofran Lawsuit Plaintiff Allegations And Zika Outbreak News Create Public Concern Regarding Birth Defects
March 14, 2016 – – ZofranLegal.com reports on recent updates regarding birth defects linked to the Zika virus and to fetal Zofran exposure, as well as the nationwide public concern of these birth defect developments. Zika has been the topic of large public concern recently, and is a virus which many believe has been transmitted through mosquito bites. It is widely believed that when expectant mothers suffer from this virus, especially during the first trimester of pregnancy, it can cause their babies to be born with a defect called microcephaly. Babies with microcephaly have smaller heads than typical babies do and can therefore suffer from brain damage or reduced brain function.
News reports have indicated that the Zika virus contracted by large numbers of pregnant women in Brazil was the cause of a sudden epidemic of more than 4,000 birth defect cases. Although the virus is still more prevalent in other countries, it has been diagnosed in America, and has caused much concern and even panic from the public. Americans have taken precautions to protect themselves from the virus while pregnant or planning to get pregnant, and many have cancelled vacations to countries where the virus has affected thousands.
Even the U.S. government has asked that American citizens traveling to countries which have been more deeply affected by Zika take proper precautions, going so far as to recommend temporary or delayed travel plans for women who are pregnant. Multiple airline companies across the U.S. have tried to do their part to ensure passenger safety by offering refunds to travelers who do in fact postpone travel due to pregnancy.
The World Health Organization declared that the Zika outbreak in Brazil was now considered a “public health emergency.” Giving the crisis this new label this will allow the organization to send money saved from previous funds which were intended to treat emergency outbreaks, according to a report on National Public Radio (NPR). As a “public health emergency,” Zika has garnished more public attention than other birth defect news. This attention is seen as a positive thing for many, who hope that it will help to educate people regarding the dire need for a vaccine against the virus, and about possible other causes of birth defects as well.
Birth defects have also been in the recent news due to the many lawsuits filed against pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline in relation to their anti-nausea drug Zofran. The lawsuits are filed by plaintiffs who all similarly link Zofran use by expectant mothers to an increased risk of the development of serious birth defects in their unborn babies. They indicate that fetal exposure to the drug caused their babies to suffer from a wide variety of severe and sometimes fatal birth defects. Similar to new findings with Zika, these mothers took the drug while in their first trimester of pregnancy. This is a time when the fetus does much of its initial limb, heart, and mouth tissue formation, and perhaps, a time when defects can easily develop.
Whatever the cause, birth defects are an important topic that requires additional public attention. At this time, birth defects are the leading cause of infant mortality. Parents and families who have witnessed their devastating effects first-hand are once again hopeful that the latest Zika epidemic will assist by raising greater public awareness and government support for future birth defect prevention initiatives.
