Invokana Lawsuit Filings Draw Public Attention To Drug’s Possible Kidney Infection Side Effects
March 14, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com comments on concerning information released regarding the occurrence of many adverse event reports given to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) linking new-generation, type-2 diabetes drug Invokana to serious and potentially life-threatening kidney damage risks. The FDA has noted over 50 reports of this kind, which were made by patients who say the SGLT2 class inhibitor drug caused the development of renal impairment and kidney failure within the drug’s first year on the market alone.
Invokana works by helping to ensure that the blood sugar (glucose) levels of type-2 diabetes patients are maintained. It accomplishes this by preventing the kidneys from reabsorbing extra sugar, and instead uses the organs to remove the sugar from the body through urination. Because of the extent of which this process relies on the kidneys, it also puts substantial stress on them, and can, therefore, pose significant health risks to those taking it, most notably, of course, patients with pre-existing kidney problems, which can be common for diabetics.
Kidney infections, (also known as Pyelonephritis) develop when bacteria or a virus is able to enter the kidney. Initially, these types of infections may seem quite harmless, however, they can easily lead to much more serious medical problems, such as kidney disease and kidney failure. Kidney damage of any sort is especially dangerous, as it cannot be repaired. Patients who suffer significant kidney damage typically require dialysis while waiting for complete kidney transplants.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has asked that patients using Invokana or other SGLT2 inhibitor drugs remain hyper-aware of symptoms of kidney damage, which can include fatigue, appetite and weight loss, nausea, headaches, and itchy, dry patches of skin.
In an additional report on the topic issued by The Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP), Invokana use among patients was linked to more than 457 serious adverse health event reports within only one year. Of these hundreds of concerning events, 54 were said to have been reports of kidney failure or renal impairment among patients.
