‘The Psychopath Next Door’ Receives Prestigious Media Award

March 21, 2016 – – The Aftermath Media Award for 2015 was awarded to Jeremy Torrie for his film The Psychopath Next Door. This fascinating hour long film documents the impact of people with psychopathic traits on those around them. Most of us think of the psychopath as a serial killer – a monster like Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer, or John Wayne Gacy. But as Jeremy Torrie explains in his documentary, psychopaths are not all physically violent criminals – they live among us, often undetected.

“Torrie’s film provides a compelling but informative look at this particularly damaging personality disorder syndrome, including insights by experts who study and work with people with psychopathic traits,” said Dr. David Kosson, president of the Aftermath Foundation.

The Awards Committee especially valued the documentary’s realistic portrayal of the affective and the interpersonal components of psychopathy. The affective traits are characterized by a deficient experience of emotions, such that we observe those with psychopathic traits to demonstrate less empathy, guilt, remorse, and intimacy than we typically expect. The interpersonal traits contribute to the ways in which people with psychopathic traits assert their will and manipulate others to accede to their wishes, even in spite of objections.

The Aftermath Foundation Media Award is given by the Aftermath Foundation Board of Directors to honor those who produce works consistent with the Mission of the Foundation. This award recognizes outstanding contributions toward public education regarding the nature of psychopathy and its impact on victims and family members of psychopathic individuals.

“What made The Psychopath Next Door so outstanding,” Dr. Kosson continued, “is that it is not about the violent or necessarily criminal psychopaths – rather, it focuses more on psychopathic individuals in personal and business relationships, with an emphasis on what to look for in their behavior as well as their negative impact on victims.” Another strong point of The Psychopath Next Door is that its entertaining and engaging artistic approach is balanced by current science and research, presented in an easy-to-understand style. The Psychopath Next Door is a strong piece that avoids the sensationalism, which often plagues other films on this topic. You can watch a trailer for the film here.
