Invokana Lawsuit Plaintiffs Observe ISMP Reports Linking Invokana To 168 Cases Of Metabolic Acidosis
March 21, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com report on more than 150 adverse event reports which have been made to U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding patients who have taken type-2 diabetes drug Invokana and who have subsequently developed metabolic acidosis. Metabolic acidosis is a potentially life-threatening condition in which the body’s bloodstream contains too much toxic acid (ketones). Details of these concerning adverse event reports were listed In a QuarterWatch report from the Institute for Safe Medication Practices. It was additionally indicated that the FDA has received 5,500 adverse event reports discussing Invokana and its potential side effects.
Invokana was the first drug to be released from a group of similar diabetes drugs called SGLT2 class inhibitors. It came on the market in 2013 after approval from the FDA. Several of the SGLT2 class inhibitor drugs have been linked to similar adverse event reports, however, Invokana currently has the most reports associated with it. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has actively addressed this issue with the public and has asked those taking Invokana to carefully watch for any signs and symptoms which may indicate that they are developing metabolic acidosis. They issued a public safety communication recently discussing several health problems associated with Invokana and also requiring that manufacturer Janssen Pharmaceuticals (a subdivision of Johnson & Johnson corporation) make some necessary changes to the drug’s warning label to better reflect possible risks.
As the adverse event reports are becoming more publicly discussed, patients using the drug have understandably become concerned for their safety, and lawsuits discussing Invokana have even begun to appear.
