Invokana Lawsuit Plaintiff Claims Diabetes Drug Linked To Potentially Life-Threatening Ketoacidosis
March 22, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on a lawsuit which has been filed against type-2 diabetes drug Invokana manufacturer Janssen Pharmaceuticals (a division of the well-known Johnson & Johnson corporation). The lawsuit was filed by a Texas woman who alleges that defendant Janssen is responsible for the severe injuries she suffered after using Invokana. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey. According to details from court documents, after she suddenly suffered from a life-threatening illness called diabetic ketoacidosis, the woman is requesting over $10 million in damages.
The plaintiff states that she began using Invokana in October of 2013. She was prescribed the SGLT2 class inhibitor drug in order to treat her type-2 diabetes, which the drug was FDA approved to do. She notes that after using the drug a short time, she suffered from serious health problems, and developed diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) as well as significant kidney damage. Due to this occurrence, the plaintiff claims to have stopped using Invokana in November of 2013.
Diabetic ketoacidosis is a condition that occurs when the body’s bloodstream contains a surplus of toxic acid (ketones). If not treated quickly enough, it can cause patients to enter comatose states or even die. In addition, kidney damage was also linked to Invokana through U.S. FDA adverse event reports.
Invokana works to help maintain a type-2 diabetes patient’s blood glucose levels. It does this by removing extra sugar (glucose) from the body through urination, rather than allowing the kidneys to reabsorb it. Because it works in this fashion, the drug relies heavily on the kidneys, which can cause them stress and damage. Kidney damage is substantially concerning as it is irreparable, and those who sustain significant kidney damage can require dialysis and kidney transplants.
Due to recent lawsuits and FDA adverse event reports, Invokana has been a topic of recent controversy.
