Xarelto Lawsuit Plaintiffs Await Trial As Study Finds Anticoagulants May Increase Risk of Retinal Bleeding

March 24, 2016 – – BloodThinnerHelp.com reports on a recent study that found that patients using anticoagulants or antiplatelet medication may have increased risk of retinal or subretinal bleeding. A report by Medscape indicates that a study conducted by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania found that risk of retinal bleeding and subretinal bleeding increased by 50% in people who have a combination of neovascular age-related macular degeneration and hypertension. The most frequently used drugs were aspirin (69.4%), warfarin (14.7%), and clopidogrel.

Meanwhile, thousands of lawsuits have already been filed against manufacturers of another blood thinner, Xarelto, which is manufactured by Johnson & Johnson and Bayer AG. Plaintiffs in the cases allege that the drug causes adverse side effects including internal bleeding, gastrointestinal bleeding, brain hemorrhaging, epidural hematoma, pulmonary embolism, heart attack and stroke. Plaintiffs further allege that the companies did not adequately warn consumers about the risk of taking the drug and that, as a result, they have suffered serious health problems and sometimes even death. Those cases against the manufacturers have been consolidated into MDL No. 2592, a multidistrict litigation panel created to more efficiently deal with the number of federally-filed cases. A mass tort program has also been established in Pennsylvania to better manage the 620 cases that have been filed in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania thus far.

The drug was introduced in 2011 for prevention of blood clots and deep vein thrombosis in patients undergoing knee and hip replacements, atrial fibrillation and for general use in reducing the occurrence of blood clots, and stent thrombosis in patients with acute coronary syndrome.

Attorney Joseph Osborne is working to help ensure that anyone who has taken Xarelto and who has also experienced negative side effects that they attribute to the drug will be given the opportunity to completely investigate their legal rights. These people could be entitled to legal action and significant compensation. Osborne is currently offering complimentary legal consultations to those affected.
