Invokana Lawsuit Plaintiffs Observe Diabetes Type-2 Drug’s Potential Link To Kidney Failure

March 24, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com discusses released reports that show that new-generation diabetes drug Invokana has been linked to serious kidney problems through adverse event reports made by patients using the drug to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. It was noted that the FDA received 50 of these adverse event reports, in which patients claimed to have developed renal impairment and kidney failure. These reports were made within the drug’s first year on the market alone.

In 2013, Invokana gained FDA approval to treat type-2 diabetes patients and was released to market. Invokana works to assist patients in managing their blood sugar (glucose) levels. To do this, Invokana blocks the kidneys from reabsorbing extra sugar in the body, and instead rids the body of that extra sugar through the kidneys via urination. The drug was released to market as the first of a group of drugs known as SGLT2 inhibitors. This abbreviation stands for sodium-glucose cotransporter-2.

As Invokana relies heavily on the kidneys in order to do its job, it has a greater potential to stress and damage those kidneys. Patients with diabetes often suffer kidney problems as is, due to their condition, and those with pre-existing kidney problems may be at greater risk for suffering increased damage to these important organs.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a public safety warning on December 4, 2015, announcing that they were requiring label warning adjustments for Invokana. These changes would be made by Invokana manufacturer Janssen Pharmaceuticals, which is a division of well-known Johnson & Johnson corporation. At this time, the FDA noted that they had received 19 adverse event reports from patients who claimed to have developed life-threatening complications after taking the drug.

These complications allegedly began as urinary tract infections (UTIs) and then spread to become blood and kidney infections. The reports indicated that each one of the 19 patients discussed required hospitalization and dialysis, a treatment for kidney failure. When kidneys sustain damage, it cannot be reversed, and patients with substantially damaged kidneys need complete kidney transplants.
