Invokana Lawsuit Plaintiff Requests $10 Million Compensation After Alleging Drug Caused Diabetic Ketoacidosis
March 25, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on a lawsuit which was filed against new generation diabetes drug Invokana and manufacturer Janssen Pharmaceuticals (a subdivision of Johnson & Johnson). The plaintiff is a woman from Texas who alleges that the drug’s manufacturer is responsible for her serious injuries which she states she has suffered after developing diabetic ketoacidosis from her use of the drug. Her complaint was filed in the state of New Jersey, and requests more than $10 million in compensation due to the fact that she suffered from what she claims were life-threatening injuries.
Further lawsuit details note that the plaintiff started to use Invokana in October of 2013. She was prescribed the drug in order to treat her type-2 diabetes and help maintain her blood sugar levels. The plaintiff alleges that after using the drug for a short time, she suffered from sudden and severe injuries, including the development of a possibly life-threatening medical condition known as diabetic ketoacidosis. She claims to have also suffered severe damage to her kidneys, which is irreparable and can be fatal. The plaintiff said that when she discovered she had developed these health problems, she discontinued her use of the drug in November 2013–just one month after starting it.
Diabetic ketoacidosis is a condition which can develop when the body’s bloodstream contains a surplus of toxic acid (ketones). Kidney damage and kidney failure have also been linked to Invokana use through recent adverse event reports to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The FDA recently issued a public safety statement concerning diabetic ketoacidosis, which can cause patients to become comatose or pass away if it remains untreated.
