Invokana Lawsuit Plaintiffs Note Adverse Event Reports Connecting Drug To Kidney Damage And Failure
March 25, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on concerning allegations surrounding type-2 diabetes drug Invokana, which links use of it among patients to potentially severe kidney risks. The connection was reported by many adverse event reports to The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). During Invokana’s first year on the market alone, the FDA reported receiving 50 adverse event reports discussing patients who used Invokana and developed renal impairment and kidney failure.
Invokana was approved by the FDA in March of 2013. It was approved to help patients with type-2 diabetes by helping them to manage their blood sugar (glucose) levels. The drug works this way by preventing the kidneys from reabsorbing excess sugar and instead using the organs to remove the sugar from the body through urination.
Invokana is considered a new-generation diabetes drug. It is classified in a group with several other similar drugs as an SGLT2 inhibitor, which stands for sodium-glucose cotransporter-2. Although all of the drugs in this group have adverse event reports connected to them, according to the FDA, Invokana has been the subject of the most reports.
Because Invokana relies upon the kidneys so much when working, it can potentially cause damage to those organs. This risk may be especially elevated for patients who have pre-existing kidney conditions, which can be common among diabetes patients. Unfortunately, when damage is sustained to the kidneys, it cannot be repaired.
The FDA has additionally indicated that they received 19 adverse event reports involving Invokana patients who were developing life-threatening medical complications starting as urinary tract infections (UTIs) and later spreading to kidney and even blood infections. It was also reported that these 19 patients required hospitalization as well as dialysis, a treatment for kidney failure. Patients often require dialysis while awaiting kidney transplants, which can be hard to come by.
