Five O’Clock Steakhouse’s Alley Cat Lounge is Open After 30 Years

Milwaukee lounge opens after extensive renovations.

Thirty years have come and gone until the Alley Cat Lounge in Milwaukee has reopened its doors to eager customers. Many have heard of the popular Five O’Clock Steakhouse restaurant, but few knew about the Alley Cat Lounge located upstairs from the dining area. The popular steakhouse is famous for its steaks, and has been recognized both locally and nationally. Why did it take so long? Managing partner Stelio Kalkounos states that the lounge was “under former ownership, and used to be called Coerpers until the lounge was secured by me and my family.” Renovations have been completed, and the historic lounge is once again ready to serve customers.

The Alley Cat Lounge was originally opened in the 1940s. Customers could enter the area through the restaurant or by a secret alley entrance, complete with hidden buzzer. Big name customers who didn’t want to be seen snuck in through the back alley entrance. The renovations are a reflection of the past, as the history of the building, restaurant, and Alley Cat Lounge are extensive and precious to many, including Stelio. Red velvet chandeliers accompanied by red velvet curtains, padded bar, and vintage ads on the wall give a nod to the lounge’s past. Servers in the early days wore fishnet stockings complete with cat tails, and were known as kittens. Stelio says that current servers will not be keeping this traditional attire.

The lounge will have some old style cocktails along with live music. Expect to see cocktails like the gin fizzes, Harvey Wallbangers, martinis, stingers and drinks made from some good Scotch, bourbon, and brandy. Friday night will have live music, some playing some great musical numbers, while others will have vocalists, depending on the band that evening. The setting is intimate and comfortable, still giving a 50s style look and feel, providing a laid back atmosphere and a good time. The Alley Cat Lounge is open for business. Order a fantastic steak, get your favorite drink, and when you’re done, head upstairs for great music in the newly renovated lounge.
