Invokana Lawsuit Plaintiff Claims Diabetes Drug Is Linked To Several Serious Infections

March 30, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on recent public safety warnings which were issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in reference to new-generation, type-2 diabetes drug Invokana. The reports concern links possibly connecting patient use of the drug with the development of potentially life-threatening urinary tract infections, kidney infections, and blood infections.

Invokana was approved by the FDA in 2013 to treat patients suffering from type-2 diabetes. The drug works by helping to control blood sugar levels by releasing excess glucose through urination rather than allowing the kidneys to reabsorb it. Because it works in this fashion, however, the excess sugar being released can encourage bacteria growth within the urinary tract and can therefore also encourage the development of potentially severe urinary tract infections. According to adverse event reports received by the FDA, these urinary tract infections have been noted to spread, and patients have reported experiencing kidney infections and blood infections as well.

Adverse event reports detailing the development of these conditions among patients using Invokana prompted the agency to require an updated warning label for the drug, which will be provided by manufacturer Janssen Pharmaceuticals (a division of Johnson & Johnson corporation). The FDA indicated that they had received several reports from patients who had required hospitalization after using Invokana due to developing kidney and blood infections, both of which allegedly began as urinary tract infections. Several of the patients indicated that their infections were so serious they caused kidney failure and required treatment in the ICU as well as dialysis.

Among patients taking Invokana, men and women most frequently report yeast infections as a side effect. Yeast infections can be painful, and were noted to affect about 10% of women and 8% of men during clinical trials conducted on the drug. Reports of yeast infections as a common side effect were closely followed by reports of urinary tract infections and blood and kidney infections. Blood infections are one of the most serious complications that can subsequently follow the development of urinary tract infections.
