Brandlive has conducted a new survey that is aiming to set a benchmark for the industry when it comes to live video content. According to Brandlive’s recent survey, 44 percent of polled companies had produced at least one live stream video during the past year, while 20 percent had plans for producing one sometime during the next 12 months. Brandlive, in attempting to establish a live stream video usage benchmark for businesses, surveyed a total of 208 professionals from December 2015 through January 2016 in terms of their initiatives for live streaming video. Included in Brandlive’s client list are major brands such as eBay, Home Depot and GoPro.
Survey participants came from agencies (15 percent), retailers (20 precent), brands (46 percent) and a group called other (25 percent). The participants included small, medium as well as large businesses that have revenue that ranges from $5 million up to $1 billion. It was discovered by Brandlive that most of the business that produce live stream video content currently use it for the purpose of training, with sales training, retail training, customer service training and in-person events outranking e-commerce sales, consumer marketing and product launches.
Of all the companies that plan to produce live stream videos in the upcoming year, most of them plan on using it for consumer panels, with virtual tours following next. Over 50 percent of all survey participants stated that they would be using live stream video as part of their marketing initiatives, including influencer briefings, consumer marketing, e-commerce sales and product launches. When survey participants were asked to rank how important live streaming video is to them, two-thirds of them stated it was either a “Top Priority,” “Very Important” or “Important.” Survey participants were also asked in Brandlive’s survey to rank what the perceived benefits were for the production of live stream video content. The top answer given was “More authentic interactions with the audience.”
There were also other perceived benefits as well, including things such as having the ability to re-use video content later and introducing a human element into digital marketing. According to the results of the survey, the two top barriers that prevent companies from utilizing live video more frequently are costs and resources. In terms of current resources, according to 65 percent of participants in the survey, their companies don’t have a video production team in-house; 30 percent stated that they do (while five percent said that they didn’t know). In terms of their budgets, 35 percent of participated stated that they will be increasing their budgets for live streaming videos, while 68 percent stated it would stay the same. There were also eight percent who stated that they would be decreasing their budgets for instant streaming video.
Over 40 percent of companies that plan on using live streaming video during the upcoming year stated they wouldn’t be utilizing an outside video production service. Over 50 percent of companies that do live streaming videos currently reported they wouldn’t be using any outside source for live video production requirements. Among companies that were considering using outside production resource, around 20 percent stated they would make use of a video platform service or video production company. Although the pool for Brandlive’s survey was limited, with only around 200 respondents, it was shown by the findings that an increasing number of brands are considering their options for live streaming video. However, it should be noted that 35 percent of participants in the survey stated that their companies weren’t planning on doing any live stream videos.) Facebook announced just this week that it was differentiating regular video content from live streaming content, and that its algorithm had been tweaked in order to provide live video streams with higher ranks within the News Feed. With live video continuing to expand on Facebook, and Periscope and other platforms expanding their capabilities, it is safe to assume that brands will be following suit and investing more resources, money and time into live streaming video content.
