Louisiana Mother Files Risperdal Lawsuit On Behalf Of Son Claiming Gynecomastia Side Effect

April 04, 2016 – – LegalHerald.com reports on a Risperdal lawsuit filed by a woman in Louisiana on behalf of her 17-year-old son in the District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana against drug manufacturer Johnson & Johnson. The son was diagnosed with gynecomastia (male breast growth) after taking Risperdal, which his mother claims was caused by the drug.

Gynecomastia is a swelling of the breast tissue in men which is caused by a hormone imbalance. According to a study published in 2009 in Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology, Risperdal was found to significantly increase the levels of prolactin, a hormone normally released in the body to stimulate the production of breast milk and breast growth. This breast tissue growth in men is benign, yet can be destructive to their emotional, social, and mental health, especially among adolescents. Surgery is usually required to correct severe cases.

Risperdal is an atypical antipsychotic drug which was originally approved by the FDA in 2002 for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults and in 2003 for the short-term treatment of acute mania and for mixed episodes associated with Bipolar 1 Disorder. Several side effects have been linked to the drug in addition to gynecomastia such as high blood sugar and diabetes, medically serious weight gain, tardive dyskinesia (involuntary muscle movements), and heart attacks.

The plaintiff, in this case, will be joining over 1,000 others who have filed lawsuits against Risperdal manufacturer Johnson & Johnson which allege that the company failed to provide consumers with adequate warnings regarding the potential side effect of gynecomastia for those taking the drug. While some lawsuits have already been settled, the remaining suits have been consolidated by the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas to form a Multidistrict Litigation.
