Risperdal Lawsuit Plaintiff Awarded $8 Million For Wrongful Death
April 04, 2016 – – LegalHerald.com reports on an $8 million award given to the family of a 25-year-old man who passed away after receiving Risperdal injections during part of a clinical trial. The suit claimed that Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, was negligent in failing to properly pre-screen the man before the trial and ignoring signs of medical distress.
The deceased man suffered from schizophrenia, a condition that Risperdal is intended to treat, and he was allegedly referred by a psychiatrist to the clinical trial. Prior to attending the trial, the man went to a hospital to be pre-screened. His electrocardiogram test results reportedly came back abnormal with a “possible heart disease” warning, yet he was cleared to enter into the clinical trial as asymptomatic.
On February 26th, 2009 the man passed away after Janssen employees allegedly failed to detect or diagnose his worsening condition after he received an injection of Risperdal during the clinical study. According to the complaint, Janssen also failed to test the man for drug or alcohol use, which his psychiatrist claimed he had previously used. Both of these factors could put the man at risk for a dangerous interaction. According to the suit, his autopsy report identified the cause of his death to be dilated cardiomyopathy, which is a heart injury and “readily treatable” condition that can be “further complicated” by the use of Risperdal.
Risperdal is an atypical antipsychotic drug that was approved by the FDA in 2002 for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults, and in 2003 for the short-term treatment of acute mania and mixed episodes associated with Bipolar 1 Disorder. Several side effects have been associated with the drug such as gynecomastia, high blood sugar, diabetes,Tardive Dyskinesia, weight gain, and others.
