Missouri IVC Filter Lawsuit Plaintiff Alleges Defective Device Caused Death Of Husband

April 07, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on a wrongful death lawsuit filed against C.R. Bard in relation to their IVC filter device. The lawsuit was filed on September 28th in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri by a widow whose husband passed away after his IVC filter device tilted while implanted, and failed to successfully protect him from blood clots.

IVC filter devices are implanted into patients who are unable to take traditional blood thinners. They work to filter the blood and block potential blood clots from moving from the lower body into the heart or lungs, where they could be fatal. These devices are implanted into patient’s inferior vena cava veins, which are the largest veins in the body.

The victim, in this case, is noted to have gotten a G2 IVC filter implanted into him to prevent the risk of blood clots in November of 2006. Unfortunately, after its initial implantation, the filter tilted, perforating his vena cava and failing to block blood clots from reaching his heart and lungs. He passed away due to a blood clot in September of 2012.

The manufacturer of this device, C.R. Bard, is being accused of marketing a defective and dangerous medical device. At this time, they are facing around 50 lawsuits referencing their G2 and Recovery filters, which have been centralized in a federal litigation in Arizona.

The FDA has issued a safety communication regarding IVC filters, indicating that they recommend removing the devices from the body within 29-54 days after implantation if the patient is deemed no longer at risk for a pulmonary embolism.
