Invokana Lawsuit: Side Effects Cause Plaintiffs to Allege Kidney Failure

April 19, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on potential side effects made by patients in regard to new-generation, type-2 diabetes drug Invokana. Individuals who have used the drug allege that Invokana can cause an increased risk of development of kidney damage and kidney failure in patients using the drug. Within Invokana’s first year on the market alone, 50 reports of adverse events were received by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration indicating the development of renal impairment and kidney failure among patients taking the drug.

With the intent of helping diabetes patients maintain their blood sugar (glucose) levels, Invokana was approved by the FDA and released on the market in 2013, Invokana works by preventing the kidneys from reabsorbing excess sugar and heavily utilizes the kidneys to remove that extra sugar from the body through urination. Since Invokana does rely on the kidneys so much, it does place extra stress on them.

In December of 2015, the FDA released a public safety memorandum outlining Invokana side effects and also included a mandate of the drug’s manufacturer, Janssen Pharmaceuticals (a division of Johnson & Johnson), to make amendments to the product’s warning label to better reflect some of the FDA’s new concerns.

In its public safety memorandum the FDA also indicated that they received 19 adverse event reports highlighting patients who had developed life-threatening health complications that began as urinary tract infections (UTIs) and later, as the bacteria spread, turned into blood and kidney infections. All of the 19 patients detailed in the adverse event reports required hospitalization and dialysis to treat kidney failure. Kidney damage is very dangerous. Once damage is done to the kidneys it cannot be undone or repaired. In many cases, patients with severely damaged kidneys will require full kidney transplants, some of which are not so lucky to survive since the procedure is complicated and intricate.
