Invokana Lawsuits In The U.S. And Canada Allege Dangerous Side Effects
April 19, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com announces news regarding Invokana, which is a new-generation, type-2 diabetes drug making headlines around the world because of adverse side effects linked to its use. Adverse side effects include ketoacidosis, kidney failure and possible death.
According to the National Institute of Health, the body normally uses glucose as a fuel. If glucose is not available, the body will burn fat instead. Burning fat releases chemicals known as ketones. Ketoacidosis occurs when high levels of ketones build up in a patient’s blood.
In late summer of 2015, a class-action lawsuit was filed in the Canadian courts against the manufacturers of Invokana. The plaintiff alleged that Janssen Pharmaceuticals (a subdivision of Johnson & Johnson) was aware of potential serious side effects related to Invokana use. The plaintiff asserted Janssen failed to adequately inform consumers or the medical community of potential adverse side effects. The plaintiff also claimed that warning labels on the drug were inadequate.
In another Canadian lawsuit, the plaintiff had taken Invokana. When she heard news reports regarding the ketoacidosis risks associated with Invokana use, she contacted her doctor. Test results indicated that after only 8 months of Invokana use, she was in the early stages of kidney failure.
In February of 2016, in Louisiana, another lawsuit was filed against the maker of Invokana (2:2016-cv-01189). In that case, the plaintiff took Invokana from July 2014 to February 2015 to treat his type-2 diabetes. The plaintiff alleged that taking Invokana caused his ketoacidosis.
