Invokana Lawsuit Follow FDA Report on Drug Side Effects

April 19, 2016 – – The ProductLawyers.com reports on the side effects of Invokana that have been linked to possible life-threatening injuries that include kidney failure, renal impairment and ketoacidosis.

Invokana is a new generation type-2 diabetes medication in a class of drugs known as SGLT2 inhibitors. Introduced in March 2013, the drug works by altering normal kidney functions so that sugar is excreted through the urine. Since Invokana was introduced, serious concerns have emerged about the safety of the drug amid reports that suggest it may increase the risk of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and severe kidney damage.

In May 2015, the FDA announced that Invokana was associated with an increased risk of developing potentially life-threatening blood, kidney and urinary tract infections. The Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) issued a warning on their QuarterWatch Report stating that Invokana was linked to over 457 serious adverse events in its first 12 months on the market, including 54 reports of renal impairment or kidney failure.

In December 2015, the agency modified its warning to say that the drug may also be linked to diabetic ketoacidosis, a dangerous condition associated with high blood acid levels. Patients were advised against using the drug at the first signs of ketoacidosis, and encouraged to seek medical attention. The FDA also added warnings of urinary tract infections that could be signs of severe blood infections or kidney failure.

“We are currently investigating several cases where individuals who took an SGLT2, such as Invokana, Farxiga or Jardiance, subsequently were diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis, kidney complications, heart attack and stroke. If we prove that these complications were caused by the drug, we look forward to aggressively pursuing the rights of our clients and recovering just compensation for their pain and suffering, and for what their families may have had to endure,” stated attorney Laurence Banville, a defective drug and product lawyer and sponsor of TheProductLawyers.com.
