New Evidence Highlights Benefits And Harms of Transvaginal Mesh As Lawsuit Numbers Climb
April 20, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on evidence published by News Medical about the benefits and harms of artificial mesh when compared with tissue repair for vaginal prolapse. The researchers, who gathered evidence from 37 randomized trials that included 4,023 women found that the benefits are small. According to the article, “the average reoperation rate for prolapse, urinary incontinence, or mesh exposure after mesh repair was 11% compared with around 5% in women who had tissue repair. Permanent mesh is also associated with higher rates of bladder injury than tissue repair, and higher rates of stress incontinence. Across all the studies, 8% of women who had mesh implanted subsequently had it re-operated.”
Reoperations for women who have undergone transvaginal mesh procedures are not uncommon if you ask some of the thousands of women who are now filing lawsuits against the mesh manufacturers. There are currently over 70,000 cases in the U.S. concerning transvaginal mesh and those cases have been filed against manufacturers including Coloplast Corp, Cook Medical, Johnson & Johnson, C.R. Bard and Boston Scientific.
The devices were approved by the FDA in 1996 for use in stress urinary incontinence procedures and then again in 2002 for treatment of pelvic organ prolapse. Manufacturers of the devices have been accused of allowing the mesh to go to market while being aware of the possibility of serious side effects which many women have claimed to suffer. Side effects alleged by plaintiffs in the cases include erosion of mesh through the vagina, need for revision surgery, organ perforation, severe pelvic or vaginal pain, urinary tract infections, bleeding, infection, inability to engage in sexual intercourse, vaginal scarring, vaginal shrinkage and neuromuscular problems.
While cases are being brought to court, attorneys at Banville Law are working to ensure that those who believe they have suffered severe side effects as a result of a transvaginal mesh implant are given the opportunity to explore their legal rights fully. Certain individuals may be entitled to legal action and financial compensation. Banville Law is currently offering free case evaluations for those qualifying individuals.
