Invokana Lawsuit Reports Adverse Event Linking Diabetic Ketoacidosis to the Drug

April 20, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com comments on alarming news reports following recent clinical trials which were conducted by experts, which allegedly links the new-generation, type-2 diabetes drug, Invokana to a potential increased risk for the development of deadly diabetic ketoacidosis in patients who have used the drug.

For those who are taking Invokana and are at increased risk, medical experts are actively working to raise public awareness of the associated risks and early symptom recognition to more effectively deal with the concerning situation. The risks associated with the development of ketoacidosis were highlighted in a recent article published by the American Heart Association (AHA) in ‘Diabetes Care’.

In the Diabetes Care article, authors Dr. Julio Rosenstock and Elle Ferrannini recommend that the responsibility for lowering the risk of diabetic ketoacidosis should start with medical professionals. Susceptible patients should be carefully managed and monitored for warning signs and metabolic changes. Some patients are at increased risk due to predisposing factors known to their health professionals.

The researchers also observed in their report that clinical trials on the drug, as well as other similar SGLT2 drugs, indicated that the development of diabetic ketoacidosis was substantially elevated in patients taking Invokana. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the drug in 2013, but have subsequently noted that they have received multiple adverse event reports alerting authorities to the potential development of diabetic ketoacidosis in patients using Invokana. European health officials also recently announced that 101 cases of diabetic ketoacidosis have been reported worldwide.

Diabetic ketoacidosis is a serious and potentially fatal acute metabolic condition originating from damage to the renal system possibly from an external factor. It requires immediate recognition and medical intervention in order to save lives.
