Invokana Side Effects Alleged in Lawsuit to Have Caused Diabetic Ketoacidosis
April 21, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on Invokana side effects that have prompted a number of lawsuits from diabetes patients alleging that the drug caused a potentially life threatening condition called diabetic ketoacidosis. One lawsuit in particular has been filed against Janssen Pharmaceuticals, the maker of Invokana, by a woman which was filed in the Southern District of Alabama under case number 1:15-cv-00636.
As stated in court documents, the plaintiff began taking Invokana in December 2014, and developed ketoacidosis shortly after. She also alleges in her lawsuit that she was never made aware of the possible side effect of developing this condition while taking the drug and claims Janssen Pharmaceuticals acted negligently by failing to clearly state these potential side effects.
Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a very serious medical condition that can induce a coma or even death in some instances. According to the American Diabetes Association, when cells in our bodies don’t get enough glucose, it begins to burn stored fat, which results in the production of ketones. Ketones break down the fat for energy. However, when ketones build up in the blood, it becomes more acidic thus causing the patient to become very ill, sometimes in less than 24 hours.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported on this possible side effect and its linkage to Invokana or other similar SGLT2 inhibitor drugs after receiving numerous reports that indicated that patients had developed ketoacidosis and has mandated that Janssen Pharmaceuticals amend its warning label to better reflect this possible side effect. The agency is also encouraging diabetes patients to be keenly aware of possible symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis. The American Diabetes Association has stated that early warning signs may include thirst or a very dry mouth, frequent urination, high blood sugar levels, and high levels of ketones in the urine. Other symptoms that could appear include constantly being tired, dry or flushed skin, nausea, vomiting or pain in the abdomen, difficulty breathing, a fruity breath odor, or a hard time paying attention or being confused.
