Invokana Lawsuit Results From FDA Warning & DKA

April 25, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on the latest safety warnings issued by the European Medicines Agency indicating possible links to harmful side effects from the use of the type-2 diabetes drug Invokana and other similar SGLT2 inhibitors. According to the EMA they have received over 100 reports linking these drugs to the dangerous condition of diabetic ketoacidosis. They have also indicated that the diagnosis for this ailment is extremely difficult to pinpoint with many patients due to the fact that the normal indicator of elevated blood sugar levels has not been present in many of these cases.

The difficulty of a timely diagnosis renders this ailment especially dangerous because diabetic ketoacidosis [DKA] can be life-threatening if not immediately treated by medical professionals. The condition has in some cases proved fatal, causing untreated patients to slip into a comatose state within a time period as little as 24 hours.

Diabetic ketoacidosis occurs when toxic acid enters the bloodstream via ketones that are produced when the body is unable to supply adequate blood glucose levels to forge and sustain its required energy. Adverse event reports have been received by the FDA linking Invokana to this condition as well as kidney damage or failure, heart attacks, bone fractures, and urinary tract infections.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a national safety warning and has mandated Janssen Pharmaceuticals (the manufacturer of Invokana) to change the warning label on this product to indicate the possible health concerns linked to the drug.

“We are currently investigating several cases where individuals who took an SGLT2, such as Invokana, Farxiga or Jardiance, subsequently were diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis, kidney complications, heart attack and stroke. If we prove that these complications were caused by the drug, we look forward to aggressively pursuing the rights of our clients and recovering just compensation for their pain and suffering, and for what their families may have had to endure,” stated attorney Laurence Banville, a defective drug and product lawyer and sponsor of TheProductLawyers.com.
