IVC Filter Lawsuit Plaintiffs Gain Support From Concerning Cook Medical IVC Filter Vena Cava Study Results

April 26, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on study results which appear to link Cook Medical’s Celect IVC filters to a 43% rate of vena cava perforation, compared with a 0% rate for Rex Medical’s Option filter. The complete study findings, which have drawn substantial concern, were published in Journal of Vascular Interventional Radiology’s June 2015 issue.

While conducting the study in question, researchers monitored 86 patients who had been surgically implanted with Cook Celect IVC filter devices, and compared their outcomes to the outcomes of 86 other patients who had been surgically implanted with Option filter devices over a period of 33 months. Each patient had their filters retrieved nearly 2 months after the initial implantation. Data results indicated a significant difference in the likelihood of vena cava perforations by each filter. While 43% of the patients who had been implanted with Celect IVC filters had suffered from inferior vena cava perforations, none of the Option filter patients had.

IVC filters are surgically implanted into patients who are at increased risk for the formation of blood clots but who are unable to take traditional blood-thinning drugs. The filters are implanted directly into the patient’s inferior vena cava vein, which is the largest vein traveling from the lower legs toward the lungs and heart. The cage-like filters work to trap and hold potential blood clots until they dissipate in order to prevent them from traveling toward the heart and lungs, causing pulmonary embolism or other severe health complications. Many lawsuits filed in reference to the filters, however, claim that they can fracture and migrate within patient’s bodies, and, when doing so, can puncture veins or become lodged in intestines or organs.

The attorneys of Banville Law are currently helping patients who have been implanted with IVC filters or are currently implanted with the devices who believe that the filters have caused them to suffer from adverse events. Affected patients could be entitled to significant compensation gained through legal action, and deserve the opportunity to investigate their legal rights in the matter.
