Invokana Side Effects Cited in Lawsuit Alleging Onset of Diabetic Ketoacidosis & Possibly Stroke

April 26, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com comments on a pending lawsuit in the Southern District of Alabama filed by a diabetes patient who used Invokana, a type-2 diabetes drug manufactured by a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson Corporation, Janssen Pharmaceuticals. The complainant, in this case, alleges in her court filing that she began using Invokana in December of 2014 and is linking that use to the development of diabetic ketoacidosis, a very serious condition that can result in the patient experiencing a diabetic coma or even death, in the extreme situation. Court papers also state that the plaintiff is claiming negligence on the part of Janssen because she was never notified of the very serious risks associated with taking Invokana.

The American Diabetes Association has provided additional information on this very serious condition. When the body burns fat the process produces ketones. When there is an excess level of ketones in the bloodstream, the blood becomes acidic, causing the patient to get sick, sometimes in as quickly as 24 hours.

Due to numerous adverse reports submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it issued a public safety warning in which it discussed the possible link between Invokana and the onset of ketoacidosis. As part of this public safety warning, the FDA also directed Janssen Pharmaceuticals to revise its product label to better clarify this potential risk in order to make diabetes patients much more knowledgeable of this potentially very serious side effect that may result from taking Invokana.

Furthermore, the FDA has asked diabetes patients to be more cognizant of their health condition and be much more aware of any symptoms that may begin to emerge that may indicate they are developing ketoacidosis. Such symptoms include excessive thirst, frequent urination, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, shortness of breath, fruity-scented breath, and confusion, as identified by the Mayo Clinic.
