IVC Filter Lawsuit Plaintiff Alleges Filter Lodged In Internal Organ Is Unable To Be Surgically Removed

April 26, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com comments on the details of IVC filter failures as reported by patients from across the United States. Many of those patients note that they have been left in physical pain and emotional distress due to the risk of future health complications caused by IVC filters which have broken loose, moved, and become permanently lodged within their bodies. Surgeons are unable to remove the devices as they are reportedly deemed in areas too risky for safe surgery. Patients who are affected by this problem have indicated that they are left wondering when and if the filter pieces will move again, and stressing over the significant health damage that this could cause.

In one instance, a plaintiff from South Dakota noted that she had an Eclipse IVC filter manufactured by C.R. Bard implanted into her body to prevent potential blood clots from traveling toward her heart and lungs causing a pulmonary embolism or other medical complications. IVC filters are surgically implanted into patients’ inferior vena cava veins, where they are designed to capture and hold traveling blood clots until the clots dissipate. The devices are used in patients who are deemed at increased risk for the development of blood clots but who cannot use traditional blood thinners. The devices are intended to be used temporarily and removed as soon as clot risks subside among patients.

In this case, however, the plaintiff notes that her filter device was never removed, and has become permanently stuck within her body. She states that the device moved and migrated from its original implantation site until it became embedded in her internal organs. She further states that surgeons had attempted to retrieve the device but were not successful. The woman notes that having the filter within her body places her at elevated risk for serious health complications that could possibly be life-threatening. Each day, she states that she lives with fear, and is well aware that there is a possibility for a sudden catastrophic event to occur inside of her body because of the filter.
