The St. Louis Blues won the seventh game of their Round 1 NHL playoffs series last night, eliminating the defending Stanley Cup champions from play in the first round for the first time since 2012. The team now gets a three-day break before taking on the Dallas Stars in Dallas Friday night.

The Blues surprised fans by stretching the series to seven games after blowing a 3-1 series lead and allowing the Blackhawks to force a dramatic Game 7 showdown that few hockey fans thought they could win. The Monday night game is being lauded as “hockey at its finest” and has set the stage for the Friday night NHL Western Conference Round 2 opener in Dallas. Spurred by the St. Louis team’s new status as king slayers, NHL ticket sales for the Western Conference semi-finals have been brisk, according to media outlets. Secondary sports ticket site, SportsTicketBank.com, lists fewer than 1,000 tickets remaining for that game, including sideline and baseline tickets at ice level, as well as coveted Platinum Level tickets that include access to the American Airlines Center’s VIP lounge and club.

The St. Louis win settled one of the few remaining quarter-final races in the lead-up to the NHL Stanley Cup Finals which begin June 1. They take their place alongside the Stars and the Minnesota Wild in the Western Conference semifinals. In the Eastern Conference, the New York Islanders, Tampa Bay Lightning, Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins have already secured their berths in the semifinals. The remaining slot will be decided in tonight’s game between the Anaheim Ducks and the Nashville Predators, the only other quarterfinal series to go the full seven games.

The winners of the seven game conference semifinals series will advance to the NHL Western Conference Finals, where they will face the winners of the series between the San Jose Sharks and an as-yet-undecided opponent. The winners of those two series will finally advance to the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs in June.

NHL playoff ticket sales are heating up as the contenders secure their berths, said a SportsTicketBank.com spokesperson, showing up as spikes in sales after each win as fans determine that their team will be in play for the next leg in the series. With only one berth yet to be decided, he said, this is the time to secure tickets to games in the Conference Semifinals.
