Invokana Lawsuit: Side Effects Are Claimed to Include Kidney Damage for Patients

May 01, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on an Invokana lawsuit filed against defendant Janssen Pharmaceuticals, the company which created the drug. The plaintiff in this case claims that she started taking Invokana to treat her type II diabetes and, within a very short amount of time, sustained damage to her kidneys.

Invokana was released to the market in 2013 as one of many SGLT2 inhibitors. The drug works by helping the kidneys to reject excess glucose. Because the glucose is not absorbed into the kidneys it is excreted out of the body through urination. This means that there is a lower level of dependence on insulin to reduce the levels of sugar in the blood. In order to work in this manner, additional strain is placed on the kidneys. This extra strain on the organs can result in damage.

Damage to the kidneys can be extremely dangerous, possibly resulting in kidney failure. When kidney failure occurs it requires dialysis until a kidney transplant is available. Because kidney damage cannot be reversed, this means that the drug, if it does lead to kidney damage, is extremely dangerous for a number of patients.

The FDA has received 50 adverse event reports which relate to kidney failure or renal impairment after using Invokana. These reports were all submitted within one year of the drug’s release to the market.

“We are currently investigating several cases where individuals who took an SGLT2, such as Invokana, Farxiga or Jardiance, subsequently were diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis, kidney complications, heart attack and stroke. If we prove that these complications were caused by the drug, we look forward to aggressively pursuing the rights of our clients and recovering just compensation for their pain and suffering, and for what their families may have had to endure,” stated attorney Laurence Banville, a defective drug and product lawyer and sponsor of TheProductLawyers.com.
