Invokana Lawsuit: Side Effects Linked to Greater Risk of Heart Attack and Stroke Resulting from Clinical Trials for the Drug
May 01, 2016 – – The ProductLawyers.com discusses the potential Invokana side effects as they relate to the risk for a heart attack or stroke. As reported by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), 13 patients using Invokana suffered from a heart attack or had a stroke within the first 30 days of using the drug to treat their diabetes. The FDA additionally reports that this alleged risk of heart attack and stroke was indicated during clinical trials for the drug. The FDA also noted that after this initial treatment period the risk of these events happening began to subside.
The FDA approved Invokana, the first drug in a series of similar SGLT2 inhibitor drugs, in March of 2013. The drug’s manufacturer is Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson Corporation.
Heart attacks are precipitated when blood flow to the heart is impeded, usually caused by blood clots. When a blockage results from the clot, the heart is deprived of the all important oxygen that it needs to function properly. Such enduring oxygen deprivation will ultimately cause the heart muscle to die. When the heart suffers severe damage from the lack of oxygen, it can no longer pump blood throughout the body with death from a heart attack being the possible result.
The New York Times discussed the findings resulting from the clinical trials for Invokana and other similar SGLT2 inhibitor drugs. The paper also raised an issue related to the drug’s warning label and the apparent lack of any mention of the potential of a heart attack or stroke resulting from the use of Invokana or the other SGLT2 inhibitor class of drugs. The New York Times also reported that Johnson and Johnson is being directed by the FDA to conduct an additional five post-marketing studies to try to determine if the drug increases the risk of heart attack or stroke.
