ISMP Reports Identify 168 Metabolic Acidosis Reports Connected to Side Effects of Drug Inspiring Invokana Lawsuit
May 01, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com comments on over 150 reports of adverse events occurring to patients who took Invokana, a type-2 diabetes drug that is part of a new generation of medications. These patients experienced a potentially life-threatening condition called metabolic acidosis, where the blood becomes dangerously acidic. ISMP, the Institute for Safe Medication Practices, publishes QuarterWatch, a report analyzing adverse event reports received by the FDA. ISMP’s report noted over 5,500 adverse events reported this past year regarding patients who used Invokana. Metabolic acidosis may be involved in 168 of those cases.
Invokana and other drugs in the SGLT2 inhibitor class direct excess sugar in the body to the urine stream for removal. This process helps type 2 diabetics to manage their glucose (sugar) levels. Invokana and other SGLT2 inhibitors were released in 2013 and have since been involved in adverse event reports, but as the first SGLT2 inhibitor released, Invokana leads in diabetic ketoacidosis-related reports.
In its Postmarket Drug Safety Information concerning SGLT2 inhibitors, the U.S. FDA included its recent warnings concerning blood acid levels, and related dangerous urinary tract infection and diabetic ketoacidosis risks, both risks linked to Invokana. Janssen Pharmaceuticals, manufacturer of Invokana, has been directed by the FDA to update their drug labeling to better inform patients and providers of the potential risks. Janssen is a division of Johnson & Johnson.
