23-Year Old California Man Pursues E-Cigarette Explosion Lawsuit After Reported Serious Injuries

May 14, 2016 – – LipsigLawyers.com reports on the details of a concerning news story published by the Los Angeles Times. The release discusses the story of a 23-year-old California man named Vincente Garza, who was reportedly getting ready for bed at home when he decided to use his e-cigarette device. The article notes that “He lifted the device to his mouth, pushed the vapor button and started to inhale. Then it exploded near his face, badly burning his mouth and dominant left hand, which was holding the device.” It goes on to report that, “Doctors amputated Garza’s left index finger, and he had to undergo immediate surgery on his tongue after the…incident. He can still barely eat.”

The dangers the article described are becoming more of a concern, as more people begin to use electronic cigarettes across the nation. The devices continue to be a topic of controversy, in the mind of the government as well as of the general public. They now make up a multibillion-dollar industry with millions of consumers using them, according to a U.S. Fire Administration 2014 report on e-cigarette fires and explosions.

Garza’s story, as the Los Angeles Times noted, was just one of 3 e-cigarette explosion lawsuits which were filed in Kern and Orange counties that same week. Those filing suit say that the lithium ion batteries used in the devices involve flammable liquids which are able to explode when they overheat, such as when they are charging or receiving too much voltage.

The article goes on to report the story of a woman named Jennifer Ries, who was awarded a sum of almost $1.9 million after suing an e-cigarette distributor, wholesaler, and store following a reported e-cigarette battery fire in her car. The woman was traveling with her husband to the airport at the time of the fire and says that she suffered painful burns to her leg and buttocks.
