Invokana Lawsuit Plaintiff Claims Manufacturer Failed To Warn About Side Effects
May 15, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on Invokana, a type-2 diabetes drug, and lawsuits linking the drug to a range of health issues specifically involving cardiovascular damage and damage to the renal system. Since its release on the market as the first in a series of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) drugs to treat type-2 diabetes subsequent to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) approval of the drug in 2013, and its link to potentially dangerous side effects have been intensely discussed in the media and among medical professionals. Invokana has also been the topic of several lawsuits which debate the drug’s safety.
One lawsuit, in particular, filed in a Southern Alabama District Court in December 2015, has been filed against Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of corporate giant Johnson and Johnson. The plaintiff, in this case, alleges that she was not fully informed about the side effects of Invokana and claims she developed diabetic ketoacidosis shortly after beginning her treatment with the drug. Ketoacidosis is a life-threatening medical condition that can cause diabetic coma and death if not treated promptly since it adversely impacts the patient’s blood with the introduction of toxic acid into the bloodstream.
Additionally, the plaintiff is claiming that Janssen was negligent in not informing medical professionals and the public about the potentially harmful side effects of Invokana, that the drug was not fully investigated before its release on the market and it was promoted “off-label” to treat type-1 diabetes. The plaintiff states she was given Invokana “off-label” to treat her type-1 diabetes, the treatment of which was not part of the FDA’s approval of Invokana.
Invokana acts to prevent the kidneys from absorbing the body’s excess sugar and instead facilitates its removal via urination, thus placing an extra burden on the kidneys. Those with renal issues should be aware of this impact before taking Invokana and should fully discuss its use with their medical professional.
