DKA Claimed As Side Effect Of Drug By Invokana Lawsuit Plaintiffs

May 15, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on a lawsuit filed in the U.S District Court for the District of New Jersey by a Texas woman seeking over $10 million that claims she suffered irreparable harm from the use of Invokana, a new-generation, type-2 diabetes drug manufactured by a subdivision of corporate giant Johnson and Johnson, Janssen Pharmaceuticals. The plaintiff states she began using Invokana in October of 2013 but ceased using it in November of that same year when she claims she developed diabetic ketoacidosis.

Diabetic ketoacidosis can be life-threatening and sometimes fatal since patients can become comatose or die if left untreated. This condition results when the body produces an abnormal amount of ketones, thus making the blood very acidic and toxic. Since ketoacidosis can develop very quickly, sometimes in less than 24 hours, and is, at times, very hard to properly diagnose, it is imperative that patients using the drug be aware of symptoms and report them to their doctor immediately.

As per the plaintiffs court documents, the Texas woman additionally claims in her lawsuit that along with developing diabetic ketoacidosis, she also suffered kidney damage resulting from her use of Invokana, a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor drug. Based on numerous adverse event reports filed with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) kidney damage has been frequently cited as a potential side effect of Invokana.

Invokana relies heavily on the proper functioning of the kidneys, as the drug maintains a patient’s blood glucose (sugar) levels at acceptable ranges by removing excess sugar from the body via urination. This added stress on the kidneys can sometimes cause irreversible damage. If the damage is severe enough, a kidney transplant is generally needed that can usually take a very long time. Dialysis is required while waiting for a kidney transplant and can cause severe undue mental stress on the patient.
