Several Potential Side Effects Noted By Invokana Lawsuit Plaintiffs

May 15, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on Invokana, the first in a series of sodium glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) drugs to be released on the market after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved it in 2013. It has been reported by the FDA that it has received 50 adverse event reports which noted that after patients starting taking Invokana they developed a potential side effect related to renal impairment and kidney failure. All of these reported cases were within the first year the drug was released for use as a type-2 diabetes treatment.

A big difference with this new class of diabetes drugs from those previously prescribed by medical professionals is that they work by impeding normal kidney function and prevent excess sugar from being reabsorbed by the kidneys and instead disposes of it via urination. In doing this, however, it places added stress on the kidneys and can potentially damage them. Damage to the kidneys is irreversible and those patients suffering from severe kidney damage will likely require dialysis and a kidney transplant.

A lawsuit has been filed against Johnson and Johnson Corporation, specifically its subsidiary Janssen Pharmaceuticals. Janssen is also the manufacturer of Invokana. The plaintiff, in this case, is alleging in her court documents that the diabetes drug, as well as the other SGLT2 inhibitor drugs, can potentially put patients at a higher risk of developing kidney damage and failure.

“We are currently investigating several cases where individuals who took an SGLT2, such as Invokana, Farxiga or Jardiance, subsequently were diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis, kidney complications, heart attack and stroke. If we prove that these complications were caused by the drug, we look forward to aggressively pursuing the rights of our clients and recovering just compensation for their pain and suffering, and for what their families may have had to endure”, stated attorney Laurence Banville, a defective drug and product lawyer and sponsor of TheProductLawyers.com.
