KMIR Channel 4 Interviews Kevin Cortright on Chapter 13 Bankruptcy

For this episode, Kevin Cortright spoke with Bryan about Chapter 13 Bankruptcy. He goes over the difference between Chapter 7 and Chapter 13, as well as the different benefits that can come from filing for bankruptcy.

The first topic that they spoke about was the definition of Chapter 13 Bankruptcy. Kevin Cortright states that someone who wants to file a Chapter 13 Bankruptcy will be earning an average to high-end income. As these are less common forms of bankruptcy than Chapter 7, they have a few different aspects to them that were noted.

A Chapter 13 Bankruptcy is different than a Chapter 7, as instead of wiping away your debt, the court believes that you are able to pay it back and instead helps you to restructure it. This allows you to pay less, or sometimes even the full amount, over an elongated period of time.

The pair then moves on to talk about the benefits of filing for Chapter 13 Bankruptcy. Kevin states that while it does not eliminate debt, the second that the bankruptcy is filed, creditors are no longer allowed to call or send bills. This takes a great stress off the debtor’s shoulders, and allows for time for the debts to be restructured.

Kevin Cortright states that sometimes debt is unavoidable, and a Chapter 13 Bankruptcy is not as scary as it seems. It has the ability to help you pay back what you owe in terms that are doable for you and your financial situation.
