FDA Outline Rules For E-Cigarettes As Explosion Incidents Prompt E-Cig Lawsuit Filings
May 27, 2016 – – LipsigLawyers.com reports on the regulations recently put forth by the FDA regarding e-cigarettes. According to the new regulations, the FDA would require e-cigarette manufacturers to disclose all ingredients considered harmful on the labeling of their devices. A list of 93 harmful or potentially harmful constituents was created in 2012 specifying which substances are considered harmful.
This is good news to some e-cigarette users who have experienced the effects of unregulated devices. In some cases, the devices’ lithium ion battery has exploded, leaving users with severe burns and other injuries. In one case, a Texas man suffered injuries to his hand after the e-cigarette exploded while it was charging. According to reports, the man still suffers from numbness in some of his fingers after the explosion caused second and third-degree burns. Similar incidents have been reported in states including Florida, Oklahoma, Colorado, North Carolina, New York, Utah, Arizona and California.
According to FEMA, 25 reports of explosion incidents were reported between 2009 and 2014 by mainstream media. The number is expected to be much higher given the unknown number of incidents that go unreported. In 80 percent of reported cases, the devices have exploded while they were charging. The devices explode when the lithium ion battery inside the cigarettes overheats. When the explosion occurs, pieces of shrapnel can sometimes shoot from the device at a high speed causing serious injury to the user or others.
