As Plaintiffs Continue E-Cig Lawsuit Filings, Doctors Grow Concerned Over Number of E-Cigarette Explosion Incidents

May 27, 2016 – – LipsigLawyers.com reports on an article by Kiro 7 indicating that doctors in Seattle have expressed concern after having treated a handful of patients with severe burns and blast injuries due to e-cigarette explosions. According to the article, four men, and one woman, all between 20 and 25, told doctors at Harborview Medical Center that they either had an e-cigarette up to their mouths or in their pockets when the cigarette exploded.

Doctors’ concerns are not without cause. Incidents involving e-cigarette explosions have been reported in multiple states including California, New York, Florida, Utah, North Carolina, Colorado, Texas, and Oregon. In 80 percent of reported incidents, the devices have exploded while charging. One such incident was reported in Utah when an e-cigarette exploded in a car as it was charging. The explosion left a three-year-old with second-degree burns and set his car seat on fire.

The devices explode when the lithium ion battery inside the cigarettes overheats. When the explosion occurs, pieces of shrapnel can sometimes shoot from the device at a high speed causing serious injury to the user or others. In a handful of instances, the explosion has caused fires that spread and left users with second or third-degree burns. Several victims of the explosions have opted to file lawsuits against the manufacturers or the stores from which they were sold.
