Concord Man Files E-Cig Lawsuit After Being Injured By E-Cigarette Explosion

May 31, 2016 – – LipsigLawyers.com reports on a New Hampshire man who is filing a lawsuit after an e-cigarette exploded in his pocket causing second and third-degree burns in February. The New Hampshire Union Leader reported in February that the 26-year-old suffered injuries in January after his device exploded inside his pants pocket. The lithium battery in the devices exploded, tearing his pants and burning his leg, according to the article. The lawsuit claims store employees installed the battery and assembled the vapor cigarette for the man.

Similar incidents have become more frequent recently, with explosions reported in North Carolina, Oklahoma, Colorado, New York, Florida, Texas, Arizona, Utah, and Oregon over the past few months. Another incident that was reported in Oklahoma left a teen with serious burns when the lithium battery in his e-cigarette reacted with coins in his pocket and set the device off like a firework. According to FEMA, about 80 percent of e-cigarette explosions occur while the devices are charging, while a handful have reportedly exploded while in use or while in a user’s pocket.

When the devices explode, it is usually due to the e -cigarette’s lithium ion battery overheating. The buildup of heat causes small pieces of the device to become projectile and hot liquid to spew from the device. In several cases, the explosions have caused serious burns and other injuries in addition to starting fires that have spread.
