Potential E- Cig Explosion Lawsuit Could Stem From Arizona Native’s Extensive Burns
May 31, 2016 – – LipsigLawyers.com reports on a recent e-cigarette explosion, where a local Arizona man was driving when he was overwhelmed by 2 burning e-cig batteries that he had in his pocket. ABC15.com shared details from the incident in a news report, that include extensive burns to the victim’s hands, and legs, which led him to seek treatment at the nearest hospital.
The victim of this terrifying explosion says that “the flames spread down his leg and burned his hand when he tried to put them out.” He says that the explosion was unexpected, and troublesome because he knows about 20 other people who use the e-cigs, and it was scary to see the damage that a device could do firsthand.
FEMA claims that there have been over 25 e-cigarette explosions since the devices hit the market in 2008. However, this statistic is most likely significantly lower than the true number of e-cigarette explosions due to an undervaluing of the severity of these incidents in the past. A similar explosion occurred a few weeks later, where a man living in Kentucky had an e-cig battery in his pocket when it exploded. The victim from Kentucky acquired third-degree burns, from the fire his e-cig explosion created and he needed heavy treatment for his injuries.
Additionally, FEMA has determined that 80 percent of the e-cig explosions occur while the battery is charging. When the internal pressure within the battery cannot be contained, the energy from within is released through the seal end of the battery, generating an explosion. In an attempt to minimize the number of future incidents, the FDA has decided that it will reevaluate the regulation of e-cigarettes which hopefully will lead to a decrease of future explosions.
