Atlanta GA – June 1, 2016 /MarketersMedia/

Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics PC has prepared an article which shows how important the oral health of a parent is in the oral health of their children. The child’s oral health depends upon more than how they take care of their teeth. It also is derived from the oral hygiene of the parent. Taking care of the teeth at every age is a key element in overall health. The health of the mother-to-be contributes to the child’s oral health, even before birth of the baby.

In addition to a direct correlation between the the oral health of the child and the mother, conditions such as periodontal disease in the mother can increase the risk of preterm birth, as well as low birth weight. It is very important for pregnant women to pay attention to their oral health both before conception and during their pregnancy. Mothers who suffer from poor oral health can be of greater risk of passing along to the child the bacteria which contribute to cavities.

During the pre-school years, it is the responsibility of parents to ensure that the child’s gums and teeth are cleaned and cared for. Cleaning may involve wiping the gums and teeth with a clean damp cloth prior to putting the child to bed. Allowing an infant to fall asleep with a bottle of formula or milk puts the baby at a risk of tooth decay. Instead of milk, a bottle of water is preferred.

As the child grows and becomes more independent, the parent must still guide the oral hygiene habits of the child. Teaching youngsters to not only brush, but to floss is a health habit that lasts a lifetime. The parent must also serve as a role model to show consistence in the care of the teeth and gums. Leading by example can show the child the importance of oral health.
