E-Cigarette Explosion Propels Scrap Metal At Barmaid, Sparking Potential E-Cig Lawsuit Filings
June 01, 2016 – – LipsigLawyers.com reports on a recent e-cigarette explosion in North Yorkshire in the United Kingdom where a barmaid sustained minor injuries. According to BBC.com a barmaid working at a pub in North Yorkshire, in northern England, was struck by an exploding e-cig that was charging behind the bar.
The victim says that “she was shocked when she was hit by the device.” Thankfully, the individual involved only suffered minor injuries from the explosion and didn’t sustain any permanent damage to her body. However, multiple firefighters that responded to the incident at the Bucks Inn Hotel in Richmond concluded that “lesser known brand e-cigarettes are a potential fire hazard.”
Regardless of the timetable of these explosions, the effects can be both physical and emotional and can be detrimental to individuals for a lifetime. In the United States, FEMA has ended the speculation behind the origin of these incidents and has stated that in most cases the lithium-ion batteries are to blame. These batteries aren’t made under intensive guidelines, especially for the lesser-known brands of e-cigarettes. When the batteries internal pressure rises too high, which occurs most often during charging, the battery releases the pressure causing an explosion.
FEMA concludes that at least 25 explosions have occurred between 2009 and 2014 in the U.S., and the rate of explosions has increased in conjunction with the rise of e-cigarette usage. One such case, occurred in Oklahoma where a young gentleman sustained severe injuries to his head from his e-cigarette exploding. The 22-year-old Oklahoma local was rushed to the emergency room, where he received 8 stitches. Luckily for the Oklahoma resident, a burning piece of the e-cig did not spark the carpeting and lead to a house fire, which could have produced more extensive damages.
